Chandigarh`s Rose Festival still in bloom

Chandigarh: It is an event that continues to have an important place in the cultural calendar of the city. As Chandigarh`s Rose Festival this week enters its 40th year, residents throng in large numbers.

The star attractions are the millions of roses themselves, but there is also a host of activities, including competitions and cultural shows, at the festival being held at Rose Garden in upscale Sector 16 here from Feb 24 to 26.

Children would be crowned "Rose Prince" and "Rose Princess" and there will be painting and flower contests. Commercial and food stalls will be set up in the adjoining Leisure Valley in Sector 10.

In recent years, the footfall at the festival has crossed over 300,000, officials here said.

The Rose Garden has nearly 40,000 rose plants of over 800 rose species from all over the world.

The garden was set up in 1967 and was essentially the brainchild of Chandigarh`s first chief commissioner and keen horticulturist M.S. Randhawa - a man credited for giving the city millions of trees and a number of gardens and green belts.

The authorities here claim the Rose Garden, spread over nearly 30 acres, is the largest in Asia. Along with the roses, the garden also hosts trees of medicinal value.

"The Rose Festival is an important event for Chandigarh. Though the city itself is young, different generations of families have been coming in the last four decades to be part of it," former councillor Chander Mukhi Sharma told reporters.

The Rose Garden has been divided into 10 sections. These sections are not only for roses but also for a children`s play area, scrubs, medicinal plants, a hillock and musical fountains.

Some of the roses at the garden have been named after international and other personalities - from Britain`s Queen Elizabeth and former US president John F. Kennedy to former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and M.S. Randhawa.

Some of the unusual names given to the rose varieties are: Only You, Dulhan, King`s Ransom, Hippie Girl, Love Me Tender, Careless Love, Lover`s Meeting, Delhi Prince, Oklahoma, American Heritage, Louisiana, Canadian Centenary, City of Belfast, Wild Plum and Dorothy Peach.

"We have to take care of the roses so that they are in full bloom when the festival comes. This year the winters have been excessively cold," said Subhash, a gardener.

For a few years the name of the festival was changed to Festival of Gardens by the local administration. However, for common people, it has always remained the Rose Festival.

Hundreds of people from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh visit the city for the annual festival. They come here packed in buses, trucks and even tractor-trolleys. The festival also attracts people from other parts of the country and foreigners.

Chandigarh, which was planned and designed by French architect Le Corbusier and his team in the 1950s-60s as a symbol of a resurgent, independent India, has a total population of over one million.

Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib

Holla Mohalla - a Sikh festival is celebrated every year in the month of March, a day after Holi. Hola "Mohalla" derives its name from Punjabi word “Mohalla” implies an organized Procession in the form of an army column accompanied by war drums and standard-bearers, and proceeding to a given location or moving in state from one Gurdwara to another.

The festival was started by the tenth Sikh Guru – Guru Govind Singh who had tried to gather Sikhs for military exercises and mock battles after Holi. This has now become a traditional annual festival of Sikhs held at Anandpur Sahib and Kiratpur Sahib in Punjab. The festival also marks the New Year as per lunar Nanakshahi calendar of Sikhs. It is celebrated over three days and it retains the character of fun and joy of Holi which concludes a day before.

Even today, Sikhs celebrate this festival joyfully by watching and performing in martial arts parades, led by the Nishan Sahibs of the Gurdwaras. Which is then, followed by poetry readings and music competitions. But viewing it closely might be risky for spectators as the participants who perform Holla Mohalla fight hard with one another even though they do not fight in reality. The celebration has been recognized as a National Festival by the Govt. of India and it is being celebrated in the state of Punjab since 1701.

Punjabi singers clean sweep college festivals in DU

College festival organisers, in an attempt to find the pulse of the crowd, have been trying to call various stars and singers who will attract students in plenty.

The focus of Delhi University (DU) is calling singers who can sing Punjabi numbers adding a little rap, English and Hindi to the songs.

Ramjas College’s annual fest ‘Mosaic’ which will be held between February 8-10 will have star performer Punjabi rapper Honey Singh and singer J star, who according to the students will be a crowd-puller.

“Honey Singh is quite famous with the youths. We spoke to a lot of students who wanted a Punjabi singer in the star performance. Such songs pull students in huge numbers. We are expecting a crowd of above 10,000 students for the show. The singers are charging a bomb, but we have to make it bigger than the last time. We called band Stereo Nation last year and it was a hit,” said Praveen Singh, student union president of Ramjas College.

The recently-over Hindu College festival ‘Mecca’ also had Punjabi singer RDB and a string of other singers like Javed Ali, who concentrated more on Punjabi numbers. ‘Mecca’ was held from February 2-4.

“There was a high demand for Punjabi songs from the students last year also. We called Daler Mehendi. Now after RDB sang a few hits for Akshay Kumar in his movies, majority of the students like him. During RDB’s performance, there were around 30,000 students going out of control,” said Manoj, students union’s president of Hindu College.

The two-day Kamala Nehru College’s annual festival ‘Ullas’, on February 1 and 2, had the  band ‘Bombay Rockers’, playing a mix of Punjabi and English songs.

“Punjabi is always accepted here as Delhi has a strong culture of it. Students want it peppy and fast when it comes to bands. Since they are already in a jubilant mood, they want something foot-tapping. Also Punjabi to many students even if is not fluent, is still understandable,” said Shikha Arora, student of KNC.

But, Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur (SGTB) Khalsa College’s festival ‘Lashkara’ calls Punjabi singers mainly because of the paucity of sponsors and funding, year after year.

“We are calling singer Jippy Garewal. He is a well-known singer. Also since the college is primarily Sikh-oreinted, Punjabi songs are liked by the students. Last year also, we called singer Amrinder Gill. This year we are expecting a crowd of over 10,000 students. Due to lack of funds, we have to settle for less-known singers, if there is more money we can call famous Punjabi singers as there is a huge demand for them,” said Somy Solanki, students’ union vice-president SGTB Khalsa College.

But some students find Punjabi rap as spoiling music. “Honey uses a lot of abuses and swear words in his songs. Student tend to like that. I like some of the Punjabi songs and sometimes it is fine, but overall they spoil music,” said Parth Sharma, student at Kirori Mal College.

Yuvraj singh cancer in first stage, curable

In what will come as a shock to cricket fans across the country and beyond, one of the finest one-day batsmen in modern cricket, Yuvraj Singh, has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy in the US.

The left-hander, who was the Player of the Tournament during India’s triumph in last year’s World Cup, has been in US since January for what was earlier believed to be a non-malignant tumour between his lungs and heart, as his family members had claimed, has now been declared cancerous.

Yuvraj’s physiotherapist Dr Jatin Chaudhary though confirmed on Sunday that due to early detection, the ailment is curable and the batsman can return to cricket as early as May.

“It is a rare tumour and is cancerous but it has been detected in stage one itself. Doctors had to decide whether to continue medication or go for chemotherapy but since parts of the tumour are just above the artery of his heart, there was a danger that while running it could burst. But it is 100 per cent curable,” Chaudhary said.

Currently undergoing chemotherapy at Cancer Research Institute in Boston, Yuvraj was also the man most responsible for finishing the Australian World Cup reign — which started back in 1999 and continued till the quarterfinal between India and Australia at Ahmedabad last year — after scoring an unbeaten half-century.

Chaudhary said medical procedure would take some time and the batsman should recover by end of March. “Doctors decided that he would have to undergo chemotherapy and he travelled to the US on January 26. End of March, he would undergo a CT scan and should recover by then. After that, it is just some rehabilitation before he is fit to be back on field in May,” he added.

Chaudhary also said Yuvraj does not require any surgery and is already feeling better. “He can’t wait to be back on the cricket field, he said.

This, he added, was welcome news as against one which said six cycles of chemotherapy would be required. “After ayurvedic treatment, only three cycles of chemotherapy are required,” Chaudhary said.

Chaudhary pointed out that there was a delay in detection due incorrect diagnosis.

“His first biopsy report was stolen from his car and the second, from a hospital I don’t want to name, did not give correct diagnosis. It was a Russian doctor who detected cancer and after consultations with doctors in US, it was decided that Yuvraj would undergo chemotherapy,” he said. Read More

Where You Get Punjabi Jutti

The jutti or Punjabi Jutti is a type of footwear of Punjabi origin that is common in North India and Pakistan. They are traditionally made up of leather and with extensive embroidery, in real gold and silver thread in olden days, though now with changing times different juti with rubber soles are made available. Besides Punjabi jutti, there are various local styles as well, like Lahori, Peshawari, and Kasoori juttis. Today Amritsar and Patiala ("tilla jutti") are important trade centers for handcrafted juttis, from where they are exported all over the world to Punjabi diaspora.

There is a great demand for Punjabi jutti in other states of the country as well, especially in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. They are also exported to countries like Singapore , Canada , America and UK on a large scale. A survey reveals that the sale of Punjabi jutti in Amritsar far exceeds the sale of other fancy sandals, thus hinting at the popularity of the footwear
